Conceived during the depths of the economic recession, MassChallenge is a startup accelerator that supports early-stage entrepreneurs. At last month’s WEF Latin America event in Mexico, MassChallenge founder and CEO John Harthorne talked with Techonomy partner Hub Culture, explaining the accelerator’s work to shift more of the economy toward startup efforts, creating “more pie” for entrepreneurs rather than forcing them to “fight each other over slices of pie.” MassChallenge teams have included a Colombian biotech company developing technology to grow tiny samples of healthy skin into larger grafts for transplants, as well as a Mexican company creating a watch that helps blind wearers avoid overhanging obstacles.
