Jack Dorsey on Working for Two Companies Full-Time

In this video from the “21st Century Individuals vs. 20th Century Organizations” session at Techonomy 2011 in Tucson, Ariz., Techonomy’s David Kirkpatrick asks Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and co-founder and CEO of Square, how he juggles two full-time jobs. What it all comes down to, says Dorsey, is a lot of discipline and structure, not to mention a 16-hour workday.

Kirkpatrick: You’re working at two companies simultaneously, which is kind of extraordinary in itself, and you have this amazing way of—you spent—just talk really quickly about how you balance those two?  I think it is kind of interesting.

Dorsey: The only way to do this is to be very disciplined and very practiced and the way I found that works for me is I theme my days.  So on Monday at both companies I focus on management and running the company which is—we have our directional meeting at Square and we have our OpCom meeting at Twitter.  I do all my management one-on-ones on that day.  Tuesday is focused on product.  Wednesday is focused on marketing and communications and growth.  Thursday is focused on developers and partnerships and Friday is focused on the company and the culture and recruiting.  Saturday I take off.  I hike.  And then Sunday is reflections, feedback, strategy and getting ready for the rest of the week.  There is interruption all the time but I can quickly deal with an interruption and then know that it’s Tuesday, I have product meetings and I need to focus on product stuff.  It also sets a good cadence for the rest of the company so that we are always delivering, we are always showing where we were last week and where we are going to be the following week.  It’s been good but we are always evolving.

Kirkpatrick: And you’re still splitting your time equally between the two?

Dorsey: Yep.

Kirkpatrick: How many hours at each one?

Dorsey: Eight hours at each one and I live across the street.

Kirkpatrick: Eight hours at each one, every day.

This guy is my hero… interesting to see how he breaks up his day.

Have been thinking of similar (but different / not as cool) themes for my week.

Wow.. Working with two companies full time! The working method is very
tough to implement. Moreover how simply and effectively, Jack manage his
work, is the amazing surprise for me.

That takes a lot of discipline. Kudos to him for taking time to breathe, hike, and reflect even in the midst of such intense focus.
